Hora Hispana
» Since
2004, I have contributed regularly to Hora Hispana, a weekly
newspaper in Spanish published by the New York Daily News
and aimed at New York City's growing Hispanic population. Here are
some stories I've done about the city and its dwellers. (In
Spanish.)
NEW
› Harping on Two Nations:
Paraguay-born, Mexico-reared harpist Celso Duarte, of Lila Downs
fame, brought traditional genres like son jarocho and
guaranias to New York. (An English version is here.)
NEW
› Unexpected Cinema:
The 2007 edition of the Latinbeat film series at Lincoln
Center brings to New York several films from countries where there's
almost no movie industry to speak of. (An English version is
here.)
NEW
› A Star is Born?:
Kat DeLuna promises she will be the first Dominican-American crossover
artist. Trained as a soprano and backed by a major label, she launched
her debut album in the summer of 2007. (An English version is
here.)
NEW
› Gray-haired Rebels:
In 1965, they were part of a revolution in the Dominican Republic
that the U.S. helped defeat. Today, they are growing old in New
York. (An English version is here.)
›
Smoke Artisans in the Big City:
Most of the people who make cigars by hand in New York come from
the same village in the Dominican Republic, Tamboril.
›
A tribe in New York:
The garífunas are one of the many ethnic groups
you can find in the city -- if you look hard enough. They come from
several countries in Central America and trace their roots to African
ancestors who survived two ship wreckages in the Caribbean.
›
After the Storm: Afro-Peruvian
folclore diva Susana Baca left New Orleans just in time before Hurrican
Katrina hit in August 2005.
›
The Matador and the World Cup:
One of the most popular Argentinean footballers, Mario Kempes worked
on soccer broadcasts for ESPN. Here, he talked about the upcoming
World Cup 2006.
